The Department of General Services’ Safety Program strives to create a safe work environment for all Commonwealth employees and reduce incidences of workplace injuries. All agencies covered under the Commonwealth’s self-insurance programs are required to follow similar safety programs and policies.
DGS safety program & manual
The DGS Safety Manual has been created based on safety standards developed by nationally recognized safety organizations, such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the International Building Codes (IBC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The safety protocols and procedures written in the safety manual are to be considered Departmental policy and are to be followed as such.
If any employee or supervisor has questions regarding the written safety procedures they are encouraged to contact the Safety Coordinator or one of the Department’s Safety Committee members for assistance or direction.
State agencies are required by Management Directive 205.38 Emergency and Safe Assembly to establish an Emergency Evacuation Plan that describes the procedures for an orderly evacuation of a building, the assembly of occupants outside the building and the items used in an Evacuation Plan Checklist. An Emergency Evacuation Plan Template has been created to assist you in developing your own plan.
